The City of Avarice
The city of Avarice was originally a small encampment, built on the edges of society by the Iron Falcons, a mercenary company. It was built out of the way from the rest of society to hide their home base, as they were a small group of maybe twenty men when it was founded, and mercenary companies were strictly outlawed. As the Iron Falcon's company grew, so did their encampment, and eventually it became a city.
The city has no valuable resources or farmland, and survives entirely off the wealth the Iron Falcons have amassed from their mercenary company. All their food, drinks, and other materials are all imported to the city. Because the city was founded by a mercenary company, it is ruled by the leader of the Iron Falcons, Griffin Hardhand, instead of a noble family. They don’t adhere to the laws of the kingdom, and they can’t be touched because the lords and kings don’t have enough resources to protect the Godscar border from demons, which the Iron Falcons conveniently located themselves at on purpose. Avarice is of strategic importance to the kingdom, even if it's citizens are outlaws.
The city is full of taverns, places to gamble, and brothels. The city is wild, especially in the late hours of the night. It is not uncommon to find a few dead bodies leftover from the previous night from gambling disputes while walking the streets in the early hours of the morning. Anybody looking to run away from the world ends up at Avarice. Although the Iron Falcons control the city, many people who are not part of the Iron Falcons reside here. Many noblemen come here secretly to partake in the joys of life that are often frowned upon elsewhere, giving the city a reputation of hedonism and debauchery.
Avarice is known for its colorful festivals and celebrations, which often involve drinking, gambling, and other illicit activities. These festivals and celebrations are usually unplanned, and just spring up out of nowhere if a night gets particularly rowdy. These festivals are one of the main attractions of the city, with visitors hoping a festival spontaneously erupts during their visit.
The city is hardly policed by the Iron Falcons, they only step in if a crime is severe enough, like a mass murder. There is a strong sense of vigilante justice in Avarice, if somebody wrongs you, you have the right to take justice into your own hands. Duels are frequent in Avarice, with crowds quickly forming around the participants and making bets. Avarice is a mostly lawless city, making it the perfect place to hide if you are on the run from the Kingdom.
A large wall resides on the western part of the city, manned at all times, usually by recruits who haven’t finished their training yet. They make sure demons do not cross into the rest of the continent. As long as the Iron Falcons keep the rest of the kingdom protected, they are basically free to do whatever they want, as their value to the kingdom far outweighs the negatives.
While the cities economy is mostly reliant on the Iron Falcons company, there are other industries that fund the city, such as the gambling dens and brothels. The gambling dens and brothels are extremely protective of their property despite the general lawlessness of the city, if you try to cheat the gambling dens or harm one of the brothel workers, you can expect to find a knife implanted in your neck while you sleep.
The city's architecture is haphazard and unplanned, with buildings of various styles and sizes crowded together. The city was built as the Iron Falcons grew, and they never planned on being this successful, so the city expansions have never been planned together. Common materials for buildings are adobe, stone, and wood.
