Devils

Devils are similar beings to demons, although instead of being about chaos, they are about order. Devils are organized beings that are obsessed with power, wealth, and strength. They are the epitome of greed, but they do not take what they want whenever they want it. They have a set order of operations, making deals that they actually honor with mortals, however these deals are often misleading and full of loopholes that benefit the crafty, manipulating devils that write them. The devils reside in hell, a layered plane of existence beneath the material plane.

The devils are all organized into a caste society, with devils only goal to improve their station in life. The measure of a devil's power is the number of mortals swayed to corruption. When the devils corrupt a mortal, they claim their soul, which is used as a currency and a measure of power.

Souls can be collected when a mortal signs a contract with a devil, often gaining some benefit while they are alive in return that their soul goes to the devil that they signed the contract with after they die. The devils are impatient, and often include loopholes to get the human souls faster. For example, a mortal may wish for wealth in return for their soul. The devil will grant them the wealth, but may steal it from a noble and give it to the mortal, unbeknownst to them. Guards would eventually track down the mortal, executing them for stealing wealth, and the devil would get the soul much faster than just waiting for the mortal to die of old age. A devil can only have one contract out at a time, so they need to include these loopholes to get souls fast. Devils have been known to be “beaten” when a mortal is able to resist the loopholes of their contract for so long, that the devil gives up and releases the contract.

Souls can have their power wrung out from them, giving a devil more power and strength. Once all the energy has been wrung out from the soul, it can then be reborn as devil, adding to their ranks. The process of wringing the power out of a soul is extremely painful and torturous, perhaps the worst form of torture imaginable, making it an extremely unattractive fate for mortals.

The most powerful devil, and the ruler of hell, is Asmodeus. He is the most cunning, and crafty being in the universe. He constantly has to deal with other devils trying to outsmart him and overthrow him, but none have been successful. Asmodeus is always ten steps ahead of everyone else in his schemes and plots, often thinking thousands of years ahead in his plans. Asmodeus has complete power over lesser devils. Mortal followers of Asmodeus often recognize the importance of law and order, and long for a higher position, willing to work to prove to Asmodeus that they are worthy of it.
